Dubai Golden Visa vs Employment Visa

Two very different routes to UAE residency

An employment visa ties your right to live in the UAE to a specific employer: if you lose your job, your visa is typically cancelled within 30 days. The Golden Visa, by contrast, is self-sponsored and remains valid regardless of your employment status.

Duration and renewal

Employment visas are usually issued for 2–3 years and require employer involvement to renew. Golden Visas run for 5 or 10 years and are renewed directly by the holder, provided the qualifying criteria still apply.

Family sponsorship

Employment visa holders can sponsor family members only if they meet a minimum salary threshold, and children lose eligibility once they exceed a certain age (typically 18, or 25 if studying). Golden Visa holders can sponsor a spouse and children of any age without a salary requirement.

Which one is right for you?

If you already meet a Golden Visa category — through investment, salary level, qualifications or entrepreneurship — it almost always offers more stability and flexibility than an employment visa, especially for long-term planning.
